The mission of the Route 2 Maxi Taxi Association is to be the main instrument for inculcating a greater sense of responsibility and in general to uplift the standard of all persons in the Maxi Taxi Industry. HISTORY
Then To Now...
Currently as one of the largest most significant and efficient transport systems in Trinidad and Tobago, maxi-taxis were initially brought as a backup service for the Public Transport Service Commission on December 24th, 1979, as the existing PH cars and four seaters were unable to keep up with the rapid demand. Consequently, Mr. Hugh Francis the then Minister of Transport by an Act of Parliament introduced the twelve-seater buses and described them not just as a taxi… rather a MAXI -Taxi. The news media then coined the term ‘Maxi -Taxi’ in their stories and articles.

Presently, there are six (6) fixed routes across Trinidad and Tobago of which maxi-taxis operate. The colours for each route include Yellow, Red, Green, Black, Brown, and Blue. Mr. Clyde Sammie from Route 1 (Yellow Band) was the first licensed maxi-taxi owner in 1979 while the other routes acquired licenses from January 1980. Additionally, on June 24th, 1997, the then Trinidad and Tobago Unified Maxi Taxi Association Route 2 Branch registered with the Registration of Trade Union under its new name ‘Route 2 Maxi Taxi Association’ a name we are all familiar with today. Additionally, in 1997 there were thirteen hundred (1300) small red band and five hundred (500) large red band maxi taxis operating on the nation’s roads.

Moreover, over the past thirty odd years, the maxi-taxi industry has faced many challenges which led to a plethora of discussions about both a monorail and mass transit system. Neither of which has yet to be implemented, this is a clear indication that maxi-taxis in Trinidad and Tobago play an irreplaceable role in our society as it enables people to communicate, meet each other and exchange ideas. In retrospect, the specific purpose of transportation is to fulfil a demand for mobility and maxi-taxis have indeed made it easier for inter-urban passenger distribution across the island.
